Personal support workers (PSWs) and health aides often work with patients who have special needs. Specialized training is available to help PSWs maintain safe, high-quality care when dealing with patients who have a disability, dementia, or chronic illness.
Personal Support Worker Dementia Certificate (Education and Awareness)
The Alzheimer Society of Toronto offers a free PSW training course 25 times per year from locations across the city. This nine-hour course consists of three modules of increasing complexity that teach PSWs about the disease, its symptoms and how it affects the person they are caring for, how to communicate with someone who is no longer able to speak, and how to deal with challenging behaviours such as agitation, aggression and wandering.
